GlassCon is headed to Chicago this year, and Chicago is a city that anyone with an interest in glass and architecture will love!
Boasting a skyline of glittering skyscrapers, Chicago’s influence on architecture has been felt since the late 1800’s, when it became one of the first cities to help pioneer steel-framed construction and utilize large areas of plate glass.
The city boasts over 100 skyscrapers, and has the sixth-most skyscrapers of any city in the world!
From the Holiday Inn Mart Plaza, you can take an architectural walk along the Chicago River and enjoy the sights of some of the city’s most famous towering glass facades, as well as see the newly opened, all glass, Apple store.
And don’t forget about the Willis Tower’s famous Skydeck! The skydeck has been open since 1979, but in 2009 a major renovation was made: an all glass retractable balcony that allows visitors to look through the glass floor and all the way down to the street that is 1,353 ft (412 m) below!
